Following on from a rather public announcement by Sheffield United gaffer Nigel Clough that Billy Clarke was on a ‘list’ of his, a none too pleased John Gregory has kindly indicated the price Crawley would want should United actually make contact officially.

In quotes carried by the Crawley News Clough is reported to have said ahead of the closure of the January transfer window.

‘Billy is one of a number of names, but we haven’t really progressed anything yet so we’ll see what happens.’

Of course the window closed without any official contact from Sheffield United firming up a bid or even their interest, but with the loan window opening next week, Gregory has moved quickly to try and put an end to the speculation starting again.

Starting by announcing that Nigel Clough hadn’t spoken to him directly or contacted the club over the player, and questioning why he’d be so open about potential targets with a journalist, Gregory quipped.

‘There has been no approach and Billy is a player I’m a big fan of, so it’s have to be £5million if they want him.’

Well that should sort that one then. The versatile player has scored five goals for us this season on the back of 19 appearances, so silly money would’ve been needed in the permanent window, but you just can’t see a loan deal coming off can you.
